The Kelp Forests of Oregon have been eaten by the family expanding Sea Urchin population, which reproduced in the warming of Ocean waters
The Sea Urchins are eating all the Kelp very fast .
An emergency effort has begun to save and regrow the remaining Kelp forests , which are homes to many more oregon fish.
Scuba Divers are going down and pulling out sea urchins. Some projects crush and kill them .
Others are bringing them to our dining tables. Oonee is a sushi dish of raw sea urchins. My friend Nate an Oregon Coast fisher and dulse seaweed aquafarmer, says he can pick up 1000 sea urchins during one 2 hour scuba trip.
He and friends have started Oo-nee company to have a feed lot tank to fatten up the pulled urchins and bring them beautiful and large to sell to the seafood market.
The Oregon Sea Grant is supporting current research brng done by our universities, OSU and U of O and ORKA has been formed to coordinate the ecological movement:
